Looking: Russell Tovey

Have you ever had that super sexy boss that you’ve imagined having an office romance with?  In Looking, the new HBO series about gay men searching for love in San Francisco, he’s Kevin Matheson, the boss and potential romantic interest of the video-game designer Patrick. Russell Tovey is one of Britain’s few openly gay actors, has made a career playing loveable heterosexual blokes. He’s never played gay before. Because his sexuality still comes up when being cast in straight roles, he’s been waiting for something substantial “that really moves things forward”, and now he has found two.

There’s no like Oh well, he shouldn’t be doing that because he’s gay, or we don’t believe his performances, because he’s gay. Tovey, 32, said of his mastery of blokedom. “That I’m not defined by my sexuality has suddenly become the interesting thing.” In The Pass, John Donnelly’s play at the Royal Court Theater in London, he’s Jason, a footballer who’d rather keep his sexuality off the field.

That time has come, and this year he will be seen in two gay-themed roles. As well as The Pass, he is in Looking, about the lives of a group of gay men living in San Francisco, with Glee actor Jonathan Groff. His character is an English video game whiz-kid. “I wanted to play American but they wanted the whole One Direction, Downton Abbey vibe because Brits are cool.”
